Volunteers & Training
Volunteer Opportunities
In 2010 we especially need new volunteers in the
Greater Salt Lake City area; Cedar City and St.
George.  Most volunteers commit to several hours a
week, 1—2 mornings or afternoons each week, for the
10—11 week tax season.  Our primary activity takes
place from February 1 through April 15.  Training for
most positions takes place in December and January.
The training includes instruction in tax law, scope of
services to be provided and in the operation of the
computer based tax software used to electronically file
the returns.  Volunteer positions: Counselor, Client
Facilitator and various leadership positions are open for
a wide variety of skills.

Volunteer Positions:
  • Client Facilitator:  Acts as a greeter, assists taxpayers
in    assembling their documents and assures that the
proper information is available to the counselor.
  • Counselor:  A certified Counselor.  Determines the
proper filing status, assures the correct identification and
documents are provided and prepares the tax returns.
All tax returns are prepared using computers and the
    IRS provided TaxWise© software.
  • Local Coordinator: A certified Counselor.  Serves as
site administrator and supervises the work of the
counselors.  Responsible for maintaining the proper
    Quality Assurance procedures at site.
  • ERO: A certified Counselor.  Responsible for the
oversight of electronic filing at the site, provides the
actual transmittal of electronically filed returns.
  • District and Technical Coordinators:  A variety of
administrative and technical positions which generally
    require year round service.

Training:
All new volunteers attend an orientation program in the
fall to introduce the Tax-Aide program and to provide
initial training in tax and computer procedures.  All
volunteers receive IRS study materials in late
November or December.  After studying the materials
and previewing the “open-book” test, attendance is
required at a training class in January.  This class
includes representatives from the IRS and the State Tax
Commission as well as AARP Tax-Aide instructors and
includes Tax-Aide administrative items, IRS and State
tax law and additional computer training.  This is
followed by completing a three section, test with a
passing grade to then become a certified counselor for
the current tax season.  Volunteers wishing to be a
Greeter/Client Facilitator are welcome to the training
sessions but are not required to pass the certification
test.

Familiarity with computer based tax programs is
desirable, a willingness to serve the community
- a must.
